Online Group Discussion - Tuesday 16th October

On Tuesday night I attended the twilight Skype discussion for all modules. I wasn't added to the group until half way through so did miss a lot of the conversation but there are a couple of things I took away from it.

1. Professional Artefact
While I understand that my professional artefact should connect with and develop from my inquiry write up, I have been wondering if I should have some idea of what form it might take by now. I am just very aware that time is moving fast and will probably feel even quicker as we get closer to our final deadline and Christmas. Helen was quick so say a definite NO, and that actually if someone did already have an idea of what their artefact might be she would be telling them to scrap it. This was a relief, as were the comments from some of the other Module 3s that the same thing had crossed their minds. I am not alone!

 2. Literature
I'm not sure who started the conversation but we spoke about stepping out of our creative arts bubbles when looking at literature. Although our professional practices all lie within the arts in some way, it is important we look at literature from other areas to help us fully understand our inquiry topics. Although not all of the literature I used in Module 2 was directly linked to creative arts, it was generally all education-based. I see this as having one foot outside my bubble. To step outside fully I plan to research definitions/perceptions/uses of creativity in other areas.

I would be interested to hear how successful other people have been in breaking out of their creative arts bubbles and how exploring a wider range of literature might have changed their thinking or approach. Please leave a comment :)

On Tuesday I attended a great Skype discussion with the most people I've seen in one chat. The 9pm time slot obviously works for lots of us! I joined late so didn't catch everyone's names so apologies if I don't give the correct people credit for what they contributed. Online Group Discussion - Thursday 22nd February

On Thursday I attended a Skype discussion with Adesola and Jae. I haven't been on a Skype chat with so few people before and, to be honest, I wondered how beneficial it would really be with so few people's input. Very! - it turns out. I began by talking about a vague inquiry idea I'd had - basically technique vs creativity in dance (wasn't sure what question I'd draw from this). In my practice as an ISTD dance teacher, there is a strong focus on technique and being 'correct' to enable students to pass exams to the very best of their ability. In my role in a secondary school, working with extra-curricular dance events and GCSE dance students, much more attention is given to creative processes, developing choreography and communicating meaning. Obviously they do overlap but are not always given equal importance. This topic is interesting and important to me because I think my own practice is unbalanced. Online Group Discussion - Monday 4th December

Last week I attended an online discussion with Adesola, Jae, Matt D and Matt S. We all seem to be in a similar place; working on essay drafts and writing blog entries to support our essays. Adesola reminded us to make sure we are using our time in the best way - she reiterated that our blog entries are not assessed and so shouldn't take time away from our essays. If we haven't done the tasks, there is no point going back and doing them for the sake of it. Their benefit lies in the support they provide for our essays. We can/should use individual blog  entries as appendices to evidence our learning and what we write. Matt D (I think) wanted to clarify whether we should include other people's views/ideas/theories in our essays. Adesola's immediate response was "why wouldn't you?".
